HEARING TIPS

Why Wearing Your Hearing Aids Matters

Woman wearing hearing aids enjoys a hike with friends.

So you don’t use your hearing aids regularly? Most of the time you keep them in the drawer unless you are, for example, going to a party or to the theater. Is it actually important to wear them more often than that?

The concern is that when you don’t wear your hearing aids on a regular basis, you’re developing some troubling shortcomings for yourself over the long term. Your hearing could get considerably worse. You could have problems with social isolation and mental decline. You might compromise your general health. So, if you are not using your hearing aids, you should definitely pay attention to this.

Why Are Your Hearing Aids Not in

You most likely have a good reason for keeping your hearing aids in a drawer somewhere. Sure, perhaps you haven’t really been forthcoming about what those reasons are. Perhaps, when your family questions you, you even say something nondescript and elusive, such as, “I just don’t like them”.

Stilted dialogue to the side, we know that’s not the full story, right? If you go a little deeper, you’ll probably find that there’s a particular grievance at the heart of your infrequent hearing aid use. Specific complaints are good because they create an opportunity to find an equally specific remedy.

Some of the most typical grievances include the examples below;

“My Hearing Aids Don’t Feel That Comfortable”

One of the most typically mentioned reasons that individuals stop wearing their hearing aids frequently is discomfort. Often, the hearing aid keeps falling out of your ear. Or maybe tenderness and pain are developing in just the wrong spot with your over-the-ear model.

It’s not supposed to be uncomfortable to use hearing aids, so something is most definitely wrong if they are creating any sort of discomfort. And it’s logical that you wouldn’t want to use a piece of technology that causes pain, frustration or soreness.

Possible solution: If you’re uncomfortable with your hearing aids, think about setting up an additional or follow-up fitting appointment. It’s altogether feasible that the fit of your hearing aid simply requires a few quick alterations. Some designs can even be entirely customized to the size and shape of your ears. The more comfortable your hearing aid is, the more likely you are to keep the device in place for long periods of time.

I’m Experiencing Poor Quality Sound From my Hearing Aids

Perhaps you find the sound of your hearing aid to be too fuzzy or tinny so you don’t wear them very often. It’s not shocking that you have decided to put away your hearing aids for a special occasion, if that’s the situation.”

Hearing aids are doing complex auditory functions all of the time as they increase some sounds while getting rid of others and that can result in a fuzzy or tinny sound. So if your settings aren’t correctly tweaked, the sound quality may seem unreliable.

Solution: This issue has two possible answer: calibration and upkeep. It’s possible that your hearing aids are damaged in some way or another and require repairs. But it’s also possible that they just need a simple calibration (usually this is something your hearing specialist can take care of for you).

Voices Are Muffled When I Wear my Hearing Aids

You want to hear voices clearly. When you first got hearing aids that was the whole reason! You needed to make sure you didn’t miss any relevant conversations. So if all the voices you hear are hard to comprehend and sound muffled it could be a bit annoying.

Because your brain and ears aren’t communicating effectively anymore, this issue commonly happens when you first purchase your hearing aids.

Solution: Practice. Understanding what people are saying is something your brain will need to become accustomed to, so putting yourself in situations where you can hear people talking regularly will be helpful. Try reading along to an audiobook or reading along with the closed captioning while you watch NCIS. Just having more conversations with the people who are around you is a very good way to get some practice, as well.
